Aim
The aim of the Department of Agriculture is to increase the area under and all major crops, increasing the productivity as per goal and thereby increasing the production of all crops. Due to this phenomena, the per capita income of farmers and Nation will be increased. At present the growth rate of Madurai District is 2.8%. The aim is to get 4% growth rate before X th Five Year Plan. Based on this aim, various infrastructures with Nos. of State, Centrally Sponsored Schemes are being implemented as follows:-

Agriculture College and Research Institute (Tamil Nadu Agricultural University Control) : 1 at Othakadai, Madurai.
Irrigation facilities

- Irrigation channels / canals : 51 Nos. (169.6 K Ms.)
- Tanks : 2579 Nos.
- Wells : 44,698 Nos.
- Double crop (Periyar - Vaigai Ayacut areas) : 13860 Ha.
- Single crop (Periyar - Vaigai Ayacut areas): 49500 Ha.

In Madurai District there are 13 Blocks. Each Block is managed by one Agricultural Development Officer. Under him, there are 1 or 2 Agricultural Officers, 8 to12 Asst. Agricultural Officers for procurement and distribution of Agricultural inputs, dissemination of technologies and demonstration of techniques for increasing the productivity and production in all crops. There are 1 to 4 Agricultural Extension Centres, managed by the Managers. Record Clerk and Watchman to state and distribute the agricultural inputs.
