Karaikudi Karaikudi the most popular town in Sivaganga District, is situated in Karaikudi Taluk at latitude 107’45” North and longitudes 7846’30” East. The town is in the metre gauge railway from Trichy to Rameswaram. Madurai, Thiruchirappalli and Ramanathapuram are equidistant (about 90 km) from Karaikudi by Road. Area of this town is 13.75 Sq.km.

Geophysical Conditions

The rocks found in the surrounding areas particularly on the western part, are of ancient crystalline type. Clay deposits in the form of calcareous nodules and lime stones are also found in the nearby areas. The soil is hard rod literate not suitable for cultivation. The climate is hot and dry.

History and Growth

Karaikudi does not have any historical back ground of interest like Sivaganga or Ramanathapuram. The origin of the town is not exactly known. But the settlement must have existed from early 19th century as Sri Koppudayanayagi Amman Temple, the oldest structure in the town traces its history from 1800.

Transportation Linkages

The town has linked with Chennai, Tiruchirappalli and Rameshwaram by railway. Tiruchirapalli and Ramanathapuram are equidistant (about 98 km.) from Karaikudi by road.
